How to Choose a Business Laptop

Choose a business laptop according to what you will mainly do with it: use office software, take video calls or process large data files. First decide whether the laptop will travel with you or mostly sit on a desk, then pick the processor, memory, drive, screen and ports. Finally, check the condition, the warranty and whether you will receive a VAT invoice.

Where to start: the kind of work you do

A business-class laptop is used every day for long hours, so first work out which tasks it will handle. Every other decision follows from that.

Office software and a browser

Documents, spreadsheets, email and a few browser tabs do not need the most powerful configuration. What matters more is that the laptop runs smoothly and does not freeze when many windows are open at once.

Video calls and remote work

If meetings fill a large part of your day, the laptop will run a call, documents and a chat app at the same time. In that case more memory helps, as does a screen that is comfortable to look at for long periods. Check whether the laptop has a built-in camera; if it does not, you will need a separate one for calls.

Data processing and heavier programs

Large files, complex reports, design or video editing software put far more load on the processor and memory than office work. Such work needs a stronger processor and more memory, and if the load is daily, it is worth choosing from the more powerful models.

Processor, memory and drive

The processor determines how quickly the laptop carries out tasks. Memory (RAM) decides how many programs you can keep open at once, and the drive stores your files and programs. The easiest way to judge how much memory you need is from your own habits: if your current laptop struggles when you open a few documents and a browser, the new one needs more memory.

Before buying, write down which programs you use most often, how many you open at once and whether you work with large files. With that list it is easier to compare the specifications on product cards and avoid paying for capabilities you will not use.

  • An SSD starts the system and opens programs faster than an HDD.
  • More memory makes it easier to work with many programs and tabs; for office work alone you need less.
  • A larger drive is needed if you keep many documents, photos or project files on the laptop.
  • Choose the processor to suit your tasks: a simpler one is enough for office work, while data processing needs a stronger one.

Screen, weight and keyboard

If you carry your laptop every day

If you travel between the office, home and clients, a lighter and smaller laptop is more convenient, because you carry it every day. For this kind of work, look for a compact model and check the battery condition on the product page.

If you mostly work at a desk

When the laptop stays in one place and is often connected to a monitor, weight becomes a secondary concern. A larger screen then lets you see more of a spreadsheet or document without constant scrolling, and an external monitor makes long working days easier still.

Keyboard

The keyboard layout is stated on every product (LT, US, DE, ND and so on). If it is not Lithuanian, Lithuanian keyboard stickers or a keyboard replacement may be possible, but for a specific model email us before ordering. If you type a lot, check this layout first: an unfamiliar one takes time to get used to.

Ports and docking stations

In an office a laptop is often connected to a monitor, mouse, keyboard and network. If you plug all of this in again every day, a docking station is a convenient solution: it gives you more connections, and you can unplug the laptop and take it with you. laptops.lt also sells docking stations, mice, keyboards, monitors and bags, so you can buy them together with the laptop.

Before choosing a model, check which connections it has:

  • a video output that suits your monitor, as not all connectors are the same;
  • enough USB ports for a mouse, keyboard, memory stick and other peripherals;
  • a network port, or the option to add one through a docking station, if your office uses a wired network;
  • the charging connection: if the laptop can charge through the docking station, one cable is enough instead of a separate charger.

You can buy a spare charger in the Chargers category. Docking station compatibility depends on the model, so before buying, email [email protected] with the exact model.

New or refurbished

Most laptops at laptops.lt are new Dell models, which you will find in the New laptops category. There are only a few refurbished (used) ones and the list changes, so a specific model may not be available. You can browse all Dell models in the Dell category.

New laptops

New Dell laptops come with a 36-month manufacturer’s warranty, 12 months for the battery, and servicing is carried out by the manufacturer’s service centres in Lithuania. On the product card they are labelled “New”. They are worth choosing when you need the laptop for a long time or for a whole team.

Refurbished laptops

Refurbished laptops are checked and cleaned, with a freshly installed operating system and a tested battery and screen. The 12-month warranty is provided by laptops.lt, and the battery has a 6-month term because a battery is a part that wears out. You can see the selection in the Used laptops category.

Condition is shown by grades, which are stated in the product specifications and on the card:

  • Grade A: like new, battery 80% or higher;
  • Grade B: minor cosmetic scratches, screen without defects, battery 70% or higher;
  • Grade C: clear signs of use, described and photographed on the product page, technically sound.

If you are weighing up these options, read our guide Used or new Dell Latitude.

Warranty, VAT invoice and buying for a company

Documents matter to a company. Prices are shown in euros including VAT, and a VAT invoice is provided with every order. You can pay by bank transfer, by card online, with Revolut Pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay or PayPal, and on collection in Vilnius also in cash or by card.

The warranty does not cover mechanical damage, liquid damage or software problems, so a team that carries laptops around all the time should get a bag. You can find the return terms on the Warranty and returns page.

Orders paid for by 14:00 on working days are dispatched the same day. You can find delivery methods and prices on the Delivery and payment page.

Frequently asked questions

Is it better for a business to choose a new or a refurbished laptop?

If the laptop will be your main everyday work tool, a new Dell is the better choice, because it comes with a 36-month manufacturer’s warranty. A refurbished laptop has a 12-month laptops.lt warranty, so it suits a backup or extra laptop better, provided you are happy with the described condition.

Will I receive a VAT invoice?

Yes, a VAT invoice is provided with every order, and prices are shown in euros including VAT.

Can the keyboard layout be changed?

It can, but it depends on the model. If a laptop’s keyboard is not Lithuanian, Lithuanian keyboard stickers or a keyboard replacement may be possible. The layout (LT, US, DE, ND and so on) is stated on every product, and for a specific model email us before ordering.

Does a business laptop need a docking station?

Not necessarily. If you connect the laptop to a monitor, mouse and network every day, a docking station is handy because it connects everything in one step. If you work on the laptop alone, you do not need one.

If you are unsure about a model or its ports, email [email protected], describe your kind of work and give the model you are interested in. Our details are on the contact page.
